The Initiative
The OBJECTIVES of the “NETWORK” include:
The efficient exchange of experience and information on the characterization of biomaterials utilized in biomedical applications
the formulation/application of novel approaches in assessing the biological properties of materials
the comparative assessment of the mechanical, physical and biological properties of biomaterials
The ORTHODONTIC BIOMATERIALS NETWORK was initiated by T. Eliades in 2002 as a research network of Universities and Research Centers from Greece, UK and Germany. Since 2011 it includes the Orthodontic Biomaterials Lab at the Clinic of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry of the University of Zurich, the Department of Biomaterials at the School Dentistry, University of Athens, the Experimental Orthodontics Laboratory at the University of Bonn, Germany, the Adhesive Biomaterials and Biomechanics / Biomaterials Science Research Group at the University of Manchester, UK and the Institute of Biosciences & Applications, Laboratory of Cell Proliferation & Ageing, NCSR “Demokritos”.

SERVICES PROVIDED
The services provided by ORTHODONTIC BIOMATERIALS NETWORK include:
Performing biological assays and mechanical-physical tests for commercially available materials.
Developing appropriate techniques for quality control and characterization of biomaterials.

Elucidating the mechanisms and mediation of acute and long term cytotoxicity for polymeric and metallic biomaterials.
Assessing the corrosion potential of biomaterials.
Biomechanical testing and theoretical modeling of anatomical structures.
